Recycle. Reuse. Rethink.
|
|
How Circle Graphics' latest Eco-Flexx™ 2.0 is leading
the way
toward a greener bulletin landscape.
|
|
It's a fact that, over the years, outdoor
advertising-and more specifically its non-recyclable waste-has left its
impact on the environment. The good news is that huge strides
have been and continue to be made toward our industry's adopting
greener and more sustainable practices and products on a wide-scale,
mainstream basis.
The development of and transition from 30-sheet paper to
single-sheet, 100% recyclable polyethylene (PE) poster substrates like
Circle Graphics' groundbreaking Eco-Poster™ was one of the most
significant successes in industry history.
In fact, more than 1 million poster units are produced
and installed annually, and since March 2009, more than 80% of these
have been converted from paper to PE single-sheet plastic and are
currently being recycled.
This nearly universal adoption of Circle Graphics'
Eco-Poster and similarly PE-based poster materials (and the equally
revolutionary CG Cable Installation System, which has eliminated the
need for glue and/or paste) proved such a success that the industry
next set its sights on the higher-volume bulletin sector, a space that
until just a few years ago had used (and continues to use) PVC vinyl as
its primary material.

Featured PM for September
Andrew Smith
Director of Technical Maintenance

Andrew has been a key staff member since 2006. He is one
of the leaders on our print production team and has day-to-day
responsibility for some of our biggest projects and technical
troubleshooting. We sat down recently with Andrew and asked him some
questions so you could get to know him better.
What does Circle's philosophy mean to you, and what do
you bring to your position to ensure CG remains the industry leader in
this area?
It means we do whatever is needed to meet our customers'
needs. Anything from "Rush" orders to putting together a
product offering that we have never produced to fulfill a requirement.
In my position, this often means reconfiguring equipment to meet the
demand or thinking outside the box to help solve a problem.
Describe a typical day, if there is one, for the CG
Production Dept.?
There is really no such thing as typical. The end goal
is always the same (get the orders completed and shipped to the
customer), but how we get there, and what challenges we face each day,
change drastically day to day. Being such a custom shop, with short
lead times, makes every day an adventure.
What are some of the projects and tasks you typically
work on?
I am involved to one degree or another in most
everything that comes through the factory. I have done everything from
help set up a production area to assist in getting Mini's printed.
What's the biggest project you've ever been a part
of? What was the most challenging?
I think the most difficult project so far were some
movie posters for the movie "P4." We had to print a bunch of
these posters and affix them to some Sintra board. This is something we
had never done before, and we had to figure out how to apply the PSV
without getting wrinkles using existing equipment. That was an
interesting project for sure.
What's your favorite part of your job?
I like many aspects of my job. All of the
technical folks report to me, and working with them and teaching them
new things is fun. I love helping people learn.
What do you do outside of work for fun?
I enjoy riding my motorcycle, fishing, video games, and
pretty much anything else outdoors.
Can you share something--trivia, an anecdote, etc.--with
us that Circle's customers might find interesting?
I have learned a lot about color since working at Circle
Graphics. Did you know that in the RGB color model the presence of all
three colors-Red, Green, and Blue-each, at full intensity, makes White?
